Anthony Holmes is intrigued and enamored with Ancient Egypt. Born in 1940 in London, England, his family migrated to South Africa in 1949. After completing schooling and obtaining a B.Sc. (Eng) degree in mechanical engineering his career path led him to the management of international engineering companies, however his passion for things Ancient and especially Egyptian pursued him into retirement.

From 2000 onwards, Anthony (or Tony as he is more often called) visited Egypt several times, initially joining tours and subsequently leading tours to the wonders and splendors of the Ancient land, including the vast openness of the western desert with its scattering of oases. His entry into writing commenced with short journals of those visits and grew into writing complete books.

The first book he had self-published is entitled “Tutankhamun – Speak my Name” and is the story of the birth, life, reign, death and afterlife of the boy king of the eighteenth dynasty whose tomb was discovered by Howard Carter in 1922. Tony has written other books on various subjects from crime to time travel, three of which have Egyptian and/or historical themes.

He has also written four children’s books for the 8 to 12 year old age group about a cat in the Pharaoh’s palace. These books are designed to be fun and a gentle introduction to Ancient Egypt for young people. In addition he writes essays, poetry and articles on aspects of Ancient Egypt and compiles crossword puzzles on the same theme. Tony lives in Cape Town, South Africa with his partner Penny who is also involved in Egyptology. She is an inspiration and provides encouragement as he continues to follow his passionate interest.

He is a member of the Egypt Exploration Society of the UK, The Egyptian Society of South Africa and the Ancient Egyptian Society of Western Australia. He has presented illustrated talks to the latter two societies as well as other institutions and clubs interested in the subject.
