Attention: Confederate U-Boat Design Resurrected for Narco Submarine. The nemesis of the modern US Navy is strikingly similar to an old adversary from the 19th Century.
During the American Civil War (1861-1865) the southern Confederates used a number of refreshingly innovative weapons to attempt to match the northern Unions numerical superiority. Some of the world's first subterranean land mines, submerged naval mines, scoped sniper rifles, ironclad battleships and submarines were successfully employed. The Confederacy's submarine designs included the first submersible to sink an enemy ship in combat, the CSS HL Hunley.
