On this day, January 20, in 1942, took place perhaps the most notorious meeting in history. In a grand villa on the picturesque banks of Berlin’s Lake Wannsee, met fifteen high-ranking Nazis. Chaired by the chief of the security police, 37-year-old Reinhard Heydrich, the fifteen men represented various agencies of the Nazi apparatus. Heydrich's objective, as tasked by Hermann Göring (and therefore, presumably, Hitler), was to secure the support of these various agencies for the implementation of the 'Final Solution of the Jewish Question', the systematic annihilation of the European Jew.

Well after watching last night’s BBC news (see video below - you have to see it to believe it!) I have to say it left me with my mouth agape for a full five minutes after the item finished.

I arrived as a tourist at the Dachau Memorial in 1978. I wasn’t sure what I would see or why I felt compelled to visit, after all, I’m not Jewish. Once inside, I was reminded of old documentaries of the camps I had seen as a child. The walls were covered with photos showing the Nazi atrocities. There was an exhibit of triangles prisoners had to wear; yellow Star of David for Jews, purple for Jehovah’s Witnesses, etc.
