Do you fancy a holiday where you can get fit, have fun and play your part in conserving the nation’s heritage? Then why not take a National Trust working holiday and know you are helping to protect some of the country’s finest coastline, countryside, historic houses and gardens.

From weekend short breaks to two-week long holidays, and prices starting at just £50, there are hundreds of activities on offer, with something for everyone.

The 2010 programme of holidays has plenty to tempt all age groups, from caring for wildlife in Somerset to welcoming visitors at Lindisfarne Castle, and from dry stone walling in Cumbria to hedge-laying in Cornwall.

Part of that aura is, of course, that we don't really know why they were erected, though many theories have been put forward, from astronomical observatories to UFO landing pads.
