Sunday Feature: Coleridge In GöttingenBBC Radio 3 John Worthern heads for Germany in the footsteps of the romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who toured the country in the late 18th century. What effect did the trip have on Coleridge’s writing? In the British Library, Worthern looks at Coleridge’s notebooks to learn more. A History Of The World In 100 ObjectsBBC Radio 4 This week, Neil MacGregor looks at objects that date from between the ninth and 13th centuries, beginning with a Viking treasure horde. The linking theme is travel, whether for trade, pilgrimage or conquest. Continues every weekday, with repeats of each episode at 7.45pm and 12.45am. A Brief History Of MathematicsBBC Radio 4 Monday 21st June, 3.45pm Marcus du Sautoy continues his series devoted to those who have made important breakthroughs in maths. His subjects this week include Bernard Riemann, who showed that it was possible to ‘see’ in four or more dimensions. Continues every weekday, except Tuesday (Budget Day). Tim Marlow On Picasso: Peace And FreedomSky Arts 2 The art critic considers Pablo Picasso’s work in the Cold War era. Although these years are often seen as a time when the Spanish master gave himself over to fame and hedonism, Marlow argues there was a strong political element in Picasso’s work. A show that ties in with an exhibition at Tate Liverpool. A Century Of FatherhoodBBC Four Monday 21st June, 9.00pm Were fathers in the early part of the 20th century really the stern patriarchs of popular myth? No, argues the first episode of an excellent new oral history series. At least in part, blame the temperance movement, which had a vested interest in promoting the idea of drunken, brutal dads. Part of a BBC season on fatherhood. Edward The Black PrinceBBC Radio Four Peter and Dan Snow tell the story of Edward of Woodstock, Prince of Wales. Knighted at 16, he commanded the English army to victory in the battle of Crecy, one of the most important battles in the Hundred Years’ War, and has become known as an embodiment of chivalric ideals. Lennon NakedBBC Four Christopher Eccleston plays John Lennon in a drama-documentary that focuses on the immediate and traumatic aftermath of Brian Epstein’s death. It was a time when Lennon’s absent father temporarily re-entered his son’s life, and also an era when the sardonic Beatle separated from his first wife, Cynthia. The Black CNN: When Hip Hop Took ControlBBC Radio 4 It’s 21 years since the release of Public Enemy’s righteously angry Fight the Power, a key track on the soundtrack to Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing. Jazzie B of Soul II Soul fame uses the song as a starting point for a study of the interplay between politics and hip-hop in recent years.
